Ya'ara is a small community in the northwest region of Israel, just a few miles south of the border with Lebanon. Ya'ara is a unique mixed community of Jews and Bedouins living together in harmony. On the day of my visit, my guide was Jeanette, an attractive Jewish woman born in North Africa. Jeanette and the other participants from Ya'ara did not know any English. My own knowledge of Hebrew is limited but I speak it with ease giving the impression of proficiency. Thrust into the midst of a large group of joyful people, most of them youngsters, I ended up in some serious confusion. With little time left in the day to overcome the language barrier and explain the project, I distributed four cameras to eight youngsters, four Arabs and four Jews ages eight to fourteen. I asked them to return when they had used up their film. The youngsters produced some great work and since I am not sure who gets credit for what I will give collective credit to all the participants from Ya'ara.
