Dr. Preston G. McLean with Rachel Berghash & Katherine Jillson

INTRODUCTION

In 1967 Dr. Preston G. McLean, a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, gave a lecture to a group of psychoanalysts, entitled "Nonsexual Uses of Sex." Rachel Berghash and Katherine Jillson highlight the main points of McLean’s lecture, which had been transcribed by Mary Hicks.

Principals

Dr. McLean

Dr. McLean (1924-1984) was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He was educated in the fields of medicine, neurology, psychiatry, psychoanalysis, and philosophy. Dr. McLean was a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst in New York. He was a teacher of physiology at New York University, a teacher of case and literature seminars at William Alanson White Institute, and a training and supervising psychoanalyst at New York Center for Psychoanalytic Training, among other institutes. For thirteen years he taught professionals, patients, and others, Interior Life Seminars organized around study, discussion, and every day uses of main notions of the great religions, philosophy, and biology; also, lives of great saints and heroes; used for new beginning and growth, integration, adaptation, and creativity.

Rachel Berghash

Rachel Berghash was born in Jerusalem, where she studied Music, English Literature, and Art History. In New York she was a student in Dr. McLean's Interior Life Seminars. She has been teaching Interior Life Seminars for over twenty years. Rachel is a Certified Social Worker and a former psychotherapist with a private practice in New York. Her poetry, translations, articles in Hebrew, and interviews with poets have been published in various magazines. Rachel was a producer of A World Elsewhere, a radio program featuring poets and writers, broadcast over WBAI-FM in New York City. She is co-author, with Katherine Jillson, of interdisciplinary essays, several of which have been published.

Katherine Jillson

Katherine Jillson, B.A.in Mathematics, M.S. in Education, was a teacher in public schools in New York State. She was an editor and writer of educational materials for various publishers, including Addison-Wesley, Harcourt Brace, Houghton Mifflin, and Random House. Katherine was a student in Dr. McLean's Interior Life Seminars. She co-authored, with Dr. McLean, several Survey Reports for American Management Associations. Katherine is co-author, with Rachel Berghash, of interdisciplinary essays, several of which have been published.
